I have sensitivities to metal. It took me years to get my dentist to give me a white filling instead of a silver one. He finally gave in when most dentists were already doing them. Now I’m having to fight him about metal in my dental crown. He says the all-porcelain crowns can’t go on back teeth. Is this the truth or another run around?
Marcy
Dear Marcy,
The biting forces on our back teeth are quite strong. Because of that, dentists traditionally place metal-based crowns on back teeth. All-porcelain crowns are fantastic for front teeth. In fact, any decent dentist who understands even the most basic part of aesthetics in dentistry would only place an all-porcelain crown on teeth which are visible when you smile.
A metal sensitivity would mean a dentist, who cares about his patients, would have to get creative. These days you can get a zirconia crown. These are metal-free. The best part is zirconia, which is known as ceramic steel, is strong enough to withstand the forces of your back teeth.
You’ll just need to find a dentist who works with those materials.
You May Need a Holistic Dentist
When you need a dentist who is willing to work with allergies and sensitivities you sometimes have to do some searching. I don’t think your current dentist is the right fit for you. He’s not even keeping up with the basic advancements in his field. In fact, you’re having to drag him along.
Because you need this done quickly, I’d look for a holistic dentist. They won’t argue with you about your allergies or sensitivities. Instead, they’ll look for solutions which work with your body, not against it. You’ll likely find they are all metal-free in their practices.
I hope this helps. You didn’t mention if you still have your old silver fillings. If you have a metal sensitivity, you’ll want to change those out for the composite fillings. However, I would do that with either a mercury-free dentist or a holistic dentist. Either one of them will know how to do a sanitary amalgam removal, which will be important, especially in your case.
