I have had tetracycline stains for most of my life. I really want to get a beautiful smile. I know that porcelain veneers are the best way to go, but I’m afraid I cannot afford to do it right. The dentist I went to that had some beautiful work cost a fortune. I looked at a different dentist who was much less expensive, but he couldn’t show me any work he’d done with porcelain veneers in the past. This makes me a bit nervous. Should I just see what happens or is there another procedure I can do that does not cost as much as porcelain veneers? I would really love to have a smile I am not ashamed of.

Dear Stephanie,
First, I am going to say that you are wise to have some doubts about the dentist who was much cheaper. If he cannot show you evidence of his work, you are on dangerous ground. Any dentist who is serious about cosmetic work, will have a smile gallery where they can show you before and after work of beautiful smile makeovers they have done.
Unfortunately, cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized specialty. That means any general dentist can do it. To make matters worse, creating smile makeovers is not adequately taught in dental school. In order for a dentist to create stunning, natural looking smiles, they need to invest in a significant amount of post doctoral training. They also need to have artistry to create beautiful porcelain veneers. These dentists won’t come cheap because they’ve invested so much in their training and developing their artistry.
In your place, I would save up for the really great dentist. So you know, the best cosmetic dentists in the country are AACD accredited. If you will find one now, you can get an idea of how much they charge and have something to aim for.
An Alternative Until You Get Porcelain Veneers
The good news is, if you are seriously persistent, teeth whitening can make a huge difference. They won’t be as stunning as they will be once you get the porcelain veneers, but you will feel very comfortable smiling.
I’d plan on whitening about a couple of months. Use the strongest bleach you can tolerate. Make sure you do it under the care of a dentist. First because you will get stronger gel that way. Second, because it is strong, things can go awry. You want to make sure your gums are protected and your teeth are staying healthy. But, when you are done, you will have a smile you can be proud of.
