I have had debilitating migraines for many years that literally leave me “in the dark” at least two to three times a week. My doctor can’t seem to pinpoint any certain cause for them, so the only way I can deal with the headaches is to take strong pain meds and hibernate in a dark room until they subside. In my own research, I came across an article that linked migraines to the mercury in silver amalgam fillings. When I brought it up to my dentist, he said there is no evidence that links the two. I don’t know what to believe. If there’s any chance that removing these fillings could stop my headaches, it’s definitely worth a try because they are ruining my life and they may cause me to lose my job. — Erica
Erica,
Silver/amalgam fillings are causing quite a stir in dentistry right now. The ADA continues to stand firm on their long-standing belief that amalgam fillings are safe; however, there are still many who would like to end the use of mercury-containing fillings all-together. Some studies show that around half of all US dentists have already stopped using them and we also know that some countries have banned the use mercury fillings all-together.
There is no dispute in the fact that mercury is toxic. The argument is whether or not the amount used in fillings is small enough to be considered safe as well as how much mercury exposure is safe. Some research indicates silver fillings can cause auto-immune disorders, neurological issues and migraines and there have been a number of patients who claim to have recovered from illness or improved their health after having their fillings replaced.
Regardless of whether or not your dentist believes your fillings are causing your headaches, if you ask, he might still consider replacing them for you. You could also look for a holistic dentist, (a dentist who specializes in not only how your teeth work, but how the body is affected by what happens in your mouth). A holistic dentist will understand your concern about the health-effects of mercury fillings and will take every precaution when removing your existing fillings so that your mercury exposure is limited.
