I have a mouth full of amalgam fillings. I recently learned they’re filled with mercury. I did some research because I thought I might be better off replacing them, but then I learn the composite fillings are laden with BPA. Is one worse than the other or am I doomed either way?
Laura
Dear Laura,
If we went by the news and online articles, it would seem like everything we use for our daily lives can kill us in one way or another. The information about both amalgam fillings, whose main ingredient is mercury and composite fillings, which contain BPA is mixed.
The American Dental Association still says both things are completely safe. Yet, there are other studies which say that they both cause some problems both neurologically and physically. Though it may seem right now like you have to choose between the lesser of two evils (if there is one), you don’t.
There are dentists who would be willing to work with you to get both mercury-free and BPA-free fillings.
You Need a Holistic Dentist
While many dentists may just blow off your concerns, calling them hype, a holistic dentist is much more willing to take you seriously. They consider the whole body when it comes to treatment, not just your teeth.
There are newer white composite fillings which are BPA-free. Not every dentist is taking advantage of them yet. You may have to make some phone calls, but I’m certain you’ll find a dentist willing to work with you to give you peace of mind with your dental care.
An Opportunity to Upgrade Your Smile
If you’re going to switch out your fillings for newer, white fillings, this will also give you an opportunity to update your smile. Teeth whitening can be done before you switch your fillings. It will take years off your smile and appearance. Plus, your new fillings can be made to match the brighter color of your teeth exactly.
